Keyword research tool : keyword analysis, step by step guide for keyword research
First of all, thank you for visiting Maxblogtips. If you have not joined newsletter/subscribe to rss feeds, I would request you to do so, that will keep you updated with all new posts on this site. Many times I get queries on how to monetize a website, ad placements, back linking and keyword research. Most of the queries are around keyword research, I am adding this post, so that all steps that I follow for keyword research are covered. I do use some tools now and then, but in this post I am going to use only free tools, plugins and resources. With tools, its easy to drill down the data further.
Anyways, lets get started with step by step keyword research. Tools used – Seoquake plugin, Couple of syntax’s and Google adwords keyword suggestion tool.. Thats it, yes that is it.
Step 1: Download and install Seoquake plugin for firefox (You can do it for chrome as well, its your wish entirely)
Step 2 : Settings on Keyword suggestion tool: Open Google’s keyword suggestion tool (log in into your google account). Make sure you choose the area to target, add Average CPC’to columns and select [Exact] match for search from left panel. Once you select all of the above, hit search, you will be having data to target in front of you along with average cpc that you will be getting on those keywords.
Step 3: Do a normal search with seoquake plugin installed. For example, lets try with “new cell phone services”. Make sure you search with double quotes around keyword as shown in below screenshot. There are 63 K results for this search term in google. Anything below 50 K results is good keyword to target, this one is little bit moderate.
We will get results something like in below screen. Results may vary from country to country (make sure you are using related geography’s search engine for example if you plan to target keyword in US, use google.com and not google.co.in, google.co.hk or google.co.uk etc, you get the idea)
Step 4: Lets start the filtering of data and get the relevant information out of it. Lets see how many pages (and not results) exactly are for the keyword, put &start=990 at the end of address in address bar to see how many pages are there on google for the keyword. Google only shows 15 pages or 150 pages for that query. Anything under 600 here at that stage is having less competition and can be ranked easily with SEO and some time.
Step 5 : Now lets see how many pages are having the keyword in title and in url. Use the following syntax to do so
In search bar type inurl:”keyword” and intitle:”keyword”, in our case the keyword is ‘new cell phone services’. Anything under 40-50 K in intitle syntax is easy keyword, like wise, anything under 30 K is great keyword.
Step 6: Lets combine both syntax’s and see what result we get out of Google. We do have approx 400 results for combination which is very good. So we did find a good keyword idea to begin with.
Last step would be to determine the effort you will be putting on to get it ranked. Go to first step where we search for keywords with quotes on. Look at seoquake bar, it shows different numbers, here are important numbers we need to consider: PR – it shows the page rank of page, L – it shows links to the very page which is on search engine results, LD – links to the complete domain, Age – shows the domain age and alexa rank. Depending on these numbers, you can check how many backlinks do you need for that particular keyword page, what exactly your competition has done to get there and you can determine the area you need to work on. Backlinks count very high on search engine algorithm, few quality backlinks are far better than 1000′s of crappy links.
I have tried to be ‘to the point’, do share your feedback and share any question you come across during the exercise.
